Throughout the day I receive calls asking me this one popular question "How much do we charge by the slice". As a cake designer please understand that this question is very generic and dated. This question would be fine a decade or two ago. But now Cakes are a symbol of expression. They are now showing the personality of the Bride and Groom or the Birthday girl or boy. Sometimes cake designers do not know what they going to do to your cake to the exact until they start decorating it. Like myself and other cake designers most of us are consider artist now. So we use our imagination as we (decorate)your cake. And at most times we don't price for what we deserve. Although this can be difficult to get exact price we try to give a price to what our efforts are worth and many time we did not profit financially but we profit customer satisfaction and pride and joy in our cakes and that make us happy as well as our clients. Having a gallery helps so customers can refer to our past occasion cakes and as we add to our gallery it help us realize how much time and money we spent for supplies. Did you know that a wedding cake that can feed 150 guest that is placed on a stand vs. A wedding cake stacked that will feed the same amount of guest cost less because the less time a cake decorator has to do your cake. So keep this in mind when you are on a budget. The complexity of a cake matter as well. For instance let design your wedding cake; You will like to have a cake that feed 150 guest and also you want it to be stacked. Now I have to ask "What shapes do you prefer"? Square is what you wanting, now I want to know do you have a theme preference and would you like butter cream or fondant. at Jazz City Cakes http://www.jazzcitycakes.com/ we like to do butter cream cakes but we like to make our customers happy if fondant is what they are seeking. If wanting fondant now your price is going up. Your side designs also determine the price. Butter cream flowers or Sugar flowers(Gumpaste flowers) is now in the formula of your cake. So now you see it can be stressful for the bride to understand their cake decorator and questioning if they are getting a fair price or feel they are getting charged too much because their friends cake was much less. keep these questions above in mind. Also taste is very important also. So brides at your cake tasting, ask as many questions you want. You should bring a list of all your concerns to your consultation so that it can run much smoothly. For any questions you may have please email me at kallen@jazzcitycakes.com and I will be glad to help.
